Trauma Registrar

Performs comprehensive trauma registry management duties including case identification, data abstraction, and quality assurance for trauma center operations, ensuring compliance with American College of Surgeons verification standards and state trauma system requirements. Demonstrates strong clinical knowledge, analytical skills, and leadership capabilities to manage trauma program performance improvement initiatives, coordinate multidisciplinary trauma team activities, and maintain accurate trauma registry databases while supporting Level I/II trauma center accreditation processes and outcome reporting.

Responsibilities:

  • Extract and abstract trauma-related clinical data from medical records with 95% or higher accuracy
  • Review emergency department records, operative reports, radiology studies, and discharge summaries
  • Apply knowledge of trauma mechanisms, injury severity scoring (ISS, RTS, TRISS), and outcome measures
  • Conduct thorough validation activities to maintain data integrity and accuracy standards
  • Identify and resolve discrepancies in trauma documentation and coding
  • Perform quality checks on abstracted data prior to registry submission
  • Participate in inter-rater reliability assessments and validation studies
  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of trauma registry data definitions and reporting guidelines
  • Support trauma center accreditation and verification processes
  • Communicate data documentation needs to support accurate trauma data collection

Required Qualifications

  • Graduate from accredited school of nursing (LPN or RN) OR equivalent healthcare experience
  • Certified Specialist in Trauma Registry (CSTR) certification preferred or ability to obtain within 12 months
  • Minimum 3 years acute care experience with trauma, emergency medicine, or critical care
  • Minimum 2 years recent experience in trauma registry data abstraction
  • Expert knowledge of trauma-related anatomy, pathophysiology, and treatment protocols
  • Thorough understanding of ICD-10-CM coding as it relates to trauma and injury
  • Strong attention to detail with ability to maintain high accuracy standards
  • RHIA, RHIT, CCS, or other relevant healthcare coding certifications
  • Previous experience supporting Level I or Level II trauma centers
