Colorectal Cancer Data Abstractor

Performs primary data abstraction duties for colorectal cancer registries including the National Cancer Database (NCDB), SEER, and state cancer repositories, ensuring high levels of abstraction accuracy for assigned accounts via comprehensive validation activities. Demonstrates strong communication, documentation, organizing, and planning skills to ensure effective leadership of multiple cancer registry accounts concurrently, while maintaining expertise in TNM staging systems, treatment protocols, molecular diagnostics, and Commission on Cancer accreditation requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Abstract comprehensive colorectal cancer data from medical records including history, diagnosis, staging, treatment, and follow-up
  • Review pathology reports, operative notes, oncology consults, imaging studies, and treatment summaries
  • Apply expertise in colorectal cancer staging (TNM, AJCC), grading systems, and prognostic factors
  • Ensure accurate abstraction of treatment modalities including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and immunotherapy
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of CoC, NCDB, SEER, and state cancer registry requirements
  • Abstract cases according to SEER Program Coding and Staging Manual guidelines
  • Document chemotherapy regimens, radiation therapy details, and targeted therapy protocols
  • Record molecular testing results, biomarker status, and genetic testing information
  • Abstract follow-up care, surveillance protocols, and outcome data
  • Generate reports for tumor board presentations and cancer committee meetings
  • Participate in rapid quality reporting and real-time data collection projects
  • Assist with Commission on Cancer accreditation and survey preparation

Qualifications

  • Completion of formal cancer registry education program OR equivalent oncology experience
  • Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) certification required or ability to obtain within 18 months
  • Minimum 3 years experience in cancer registry or oncology data management
  • Demonstrated knowledge of gastrointestinal oncology and treatment protocols
  • Comprehensive understanding of colorectal anatomy, pathophysiology, and disease processes
  • Expert knowledge of colorectal surgical procedures and terminology
  • Familiarity with chemotherapy protocols, radiation therapy techniques, and emerging treatments
  • Understanding of molecular diagnostics, biomarkers, and precision medicine in colorectal cancer
  • Experience with electronic health records and pathology information systems
  • Bachelor’s degree in health information management, life sciences, or related field
  • RHIA, RHIT, or other health information credentials
  • TNM staging system for colon and rectal cancers (AJCC 8th Edition)
  • Histologic subtypes and grading systems for colorectal adenocarcinomas
